Taharat Ha-Kodesh Choral Synagogue

Updated: Aug 3, 2020

The Jewish house of prayer "TAHAROT-HAKODES" is called a choral synagogue. Vilnius Choral Synagogue or Taharot Hakodesh Synagogue is the only surviving out of over 100 Vilnius synagogues and Jewish houses of worship. Today it is better known as simply Vilnius Synagogue. Built in 1903, the Torat Hakodesh Synagogue survived the war because the Nazis used the edifice as a medical store.

The building is in the Mauritanian style, built on the reformist example of German synagogues. The synagogue has two floors. There is a men's section on the first floor and a women's section and a room for the choir on the second floor. The façade contains an inscription in Hebrew: "House of prayer - a sanctuary for all nations." Above the pediment of the synagogue are tables with the Ten Commandments of God.
